In 2005, the makers of Minute Maid and the Astros announced the Minute Maid Grand Slam For Youth Baseball Scholarship Program to assist greater Houston-area high school senior boys and girls with college expenses. Since the scholarship program inception, MMGSFYB has given more than 180 scholarships to Houston area high school seniors and 42% of these scholarships were awarded to first-generation students.

2017 Minute Maid Grand Slam For Youth Baseball $5,000 Scholarship Recipients Recognized prior to Astros Game Saturday, June 17, 2017.

2017 is the 13th year of the Minute Maid Grand Slam For Youth Baseball (MMGSFYB) Scholarship program and the first year MMGSFYB is awarding twenty-five (25) $5,000 scholarships. Since 2005, MMGSFYB has awarded 301 scholarships and grants totaling more than $800,000. Annually, hundreds of applications are received and reviewed from all over Texas. The 2017 recipients are represented by 13 boys and 12 girls and of the 25, 14 are first-generation college students.

The 2017 recipients are:

  • Matthew Bohac from Jasper is a graduate of Newton High School. He will be attending Texas A&M University pursuing a career in Engineering.
  • Christian Carrizal from Houston is a graduate of Austin High School. He will be attending Texas A&M University pursuing a career in Business.
  • Hulda Flores from Houston is a graduate of Eastwood Academy High School. She will be attending Brandeis University pursuing a career in Sociology - Pre law.
  • Maria Flores from Eagle Pass is a graduate of CC Winn High School. She will be attending Texas State University pursuing a career in Communication Disorders.
  • Anthony Foreman from Houston is a graduate of Sam Houston Math, Science & Technology Center. He will be attending University of Texas pursuing a career in Radio/TV.
  • Obet Gomez from Houston is a graduate of Heights High School. He will be attending Texas Tech University pursuing a career in Petroleum Engineer.
  • Aman Gulrajani from Katy is a graduate of Tompkins High School. He will be attending University of Illinois pursuing a career in Business.
  • Shania Holmes-Kemp from Houston is a graduate of Hope Academy High School. She will be attending Texas Southern University pursuing a career in Biology.
  • Tyree Jackson from Houston is a graduate of Carver High School. He will be attending University of Texas pursuing a career in Computer Science.
  • Madison Jan from Needville is a graduate of Needville High School. She will be attending Texas State University pursuing a career in Special Education.
  • Mason Krezinski from Spring is a graduate of Spring High School. He will be attending Texas A&M University pursuing a career in Electrical Engineering.
  • Erick Lopez from Eagle Pass is a graduate of CC Winn High School. He will be attending Texas A&M University pursuing a career in Business Administration.
  • David Munoz from Charlotte is a graduate of Charlotte High School. He will be attending University of Houston pursuing a career in Business.

  • Chinwendu Owhochukwu from Richmond is a graduate of KIPP Houston High School. She will be attending Princeton University pursuing a career in Neuroscience.
  • Alexis Richardson from Houston is a graduate of Jersey Village High School. She will be attending University of Mississippi pursuing a career in Pre-Med Biology.
  • Angelica Rodriguez from Houston is a graduate of Galena Park High School. She will be attending Texas A&M University pursuing a career in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Gisselle Salas from Channelview is a graduate of Milby High School. She will be attending Sam Houston State University pursuing a career in Criminal Justice.
  • Israel Sanchez from Pasadena is a graduate of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Prep. He will be attending Texas A&M Kingsville pursuing a career in Accounting.
  • Kendall Schroeder from Houston is a graduate of Second Baptist School. She will be attending University of Texas San Antonio pursuing a career in Nutrition/Dietetics.
