Minute Maid And The Houston Astros Select
La Marque Little League's Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium To Be Refurbished

Ball field to become third to be refurbished through Minute Maid and Astros Grand Slam for Youth Baseball Program.

HOUSTON - Minute Maid and the Houston Astros announced that Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium has been selected as the third ball field to be refurbished through the Grand Slam for Youth Baseball (GSFYB) program - a four-tiered community outreach effort that seeks to foster self-confidence, involvement, teamwork, and fun among area children. Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium is home to the La Marque Little League. Included in the field refurbishment are plans to renovate bleachers, replace fences, modify and update the dugouts, rework and improve the playing field, replace the scoreboard, install a flagpole, and paint existing buildings. The work should be completed by Spring 2005. Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium is located just off of I-45 South in La Marque, Texas. The field was nominated for refurbishment by La Marque Little League President Pat Butler and Board Member Mike Wev during the Grand Slam for Youth Baseball field refurbishment application process that took place in July and August. Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium was selected from dozens of worthwhile entries based on several factors including its community use and involvement and its opportunity to provide an even safer ball field for players and fans.

Bobby Beach Memorial Stadium was built in 1963 by George W. Beach in honor of his son on property leased to the La Marque Little League. In 1964, the La Marque Little League purchased the property from Sybil G. Sherwood and has owned it ever since. Today, the league operates as the La Marque Little League and is one of the oldest independent Little Leagues in Texas, run solely by parents, volunteers, and donors with no governmental funding. In 2004, approximately 250-300 children played in the league.

Houston Parks and Recreation Department's Settegast Park Ballfield in Houston's East End was the first field to be refurbished through Grand Slam for Youth Baseball in 2003. Last year, the Northeast Family YMCA Youth Baseball Field located at Tidwell and North Wayside in Northeast Houston became the second field to be refurbished. Minute Maid and the Astros plan to renovate one local ball field each year for the next 25 years.
