In 2005, the makers of Minute Maid and the Astros announced the Minute Maid Grand Slam For Youth Baseball Scholarship Program to assist greater Houston-area high school senior boys and girls with college expenses. Since the scholarship program inception, MMGSFYB has given more than 180 scholarships to Houston area high school seniors and 42% of these scholarships were awarded to first-generation students.

2013 MINUTE MAID GRAND SLAM FOR YOUTH
BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Minute Maid, your hometown juice brand, in partnership with the Houston Astros, announced the winners of the Minute Maid Grand Slam for Youth Baseball (MMGSFYB) scholarship for high school seniors at the Saturday, June 29th Astros game against the Los Angeles Angels. Twenty-five students were awarded $2,500 to assist with their college expenses during a pre-game ceremony at Minute Maid Park. The winners will pursue degrees at a variety of institutions running the gamut from Texas A&M to Louisiana State University to the University of Notre Dame. Fifty-two percent of the recipients are first-generation college students.

"We salute these outstanding graduates," says Mike Saint John, Minute Maid President. "They are all to be commended for their accomplishments in academics, athletics and community service." Saint John added, "This year's recipients bring the total Minute Maid Grand Slam for Youth Baseball Scholarship and Grant recipients to 181, representing 55 towns and cities in Texas. All of us at Minute Maid are very proud to have helped that many young individuals from our area pursue their dream of a higher education."

The 25 scholarship recipients are:

•  Nicholas Sheppard from Houston. A graduate of Westside High School - Nicholas will be attending Howard University

•  Angel Simon from Meadows Place. A graduate of KIPP Houston High School - Angel will be attending Louisiana State University

•  Alyssa Suarez from Houston. A graduate of North Shore Senior High School - Alyssa will be attending Sam Houston State University

•  Elliot Hall from Houston. A graduate of Westbury High School - Elliot will be attending University of Houston

•  Allison Huggins from Katy. A graduate of Cypress Ranch High School - Allison will be attending University of Houston

•  Claudia Aguilar from Richmond. A graduate of Foster High School - Claudia will be attending Texas State University

•  Jacob Cruz from Pasadena. A graduate of Pasadena High School - Jacob will be attending Texas Southern University

•  Tyra Ford from Houston. A graduate of North Houston Early College High School - Tyra will be attending Fisk University

•  Jennifer Frericks from Kingwood. A graduate of Kingwood High School - Jennifer will be attending Blinn College - Bryan Campus

•  Alyson Gregory from Katy. A graduate of Seven Lakes High School - Alyson will be attending Texas A & M University

•  David Jew from Cypress. A graduate of Cypress Ranch High School - David will be attending Texas A & M University
